Why don't animals have the right to live like humans? Why does the human get to decide if any animal lives or dies? Why are animals in the US seen as property and not living beings with feelings?
Animals Being Surrendered Overwhelmed Shelter
Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter Director Hack Tull has noticed a disturbing trend in the types and numbers of animals brought to the shelter.
Normal capacity of the shelter is 75 to 100 animals. But one day last week, Tull said nearly 100 pets were brought in by their owners.
"We had 95 dogs that day that citizens surrendered — for whatever reason," Tull said. "They were either moving into an apartment and couldn't take them or they just couldn't afford to feed them.
The shelter on Well Road euthanizes about 25 animals a day. Tull said the increase in household pets coming to the shelter has reduced space to house adoptable animals.
Shelter manager Roger Laird said the reasons owners give vary widely, from the animals urinating on the carpet to not being able to afford them. One owner surrendered a Pomeranian because the dog didn't match the furniture. "I think a lot of them are just excuses," Laird said.
Christy Primm, a founding member of PAWS of Northeast Louisiana, believes the increase is because of several reasons — the economy and a lack of responsibility by owners.
